Asset-quality review
Asset-quality review: falling NPL ratios hide rising vulnerabilities
We expect non-performing loans to rise in 2023 as inflation and higher interest rates weigh on demand and profits. Rising NPLs this year and beyond will reverse the trend of the past decade, which has seen euro area banks significantly reduce bad loan stocks through securitisations and asset disposals. “For 2023, we expect headwinds in all types of loan portfolios”, Saldias highlighted. “They may take some time to show up in headline asset-quality ratios but early signs of deterioration are already visible in faster-moving asset-quality metrics such as Stage 2 loan classifications under IFRS 9”.

Party over for European homeowners
The uncertain economic environment continues to push European house prices lower. But challenges are also crystallising in net residential mortgage lending, which nosedived to almost zero ...The situation exposes mortgage covered bonds to several risks. First and most obviously, from weakening credit quality resulting from higher defaults and decreasing property values. Lower property values may reduce recovery and by definition increase expected loss. Lower property values can also affect the over-collateralisation (OC) of covered bond programmes.

While Nordic households are the most exposed to value corrections because they are vulnerable to mortgage risks arising from affordability shocks and value declines, Germany’s position as the second worst performer was more of a surprise.

Schon wieder Bankenrettungen!

Europe's new IRRBB test
> https://www.ariva.de/forum/...er-eurozone-472954?page=311#jumppos7783
Europe’s new IRRBB test: Financial regulation is a process of trial and error. Pull a lever too far and the system lurches out of balance. Push it back the other way and you risk overcorrecting. In their latest rules for interest rate risk in the banking book, or IRRBB, European regulators face just such a predicament.
https://www.risk.net/regulation/7956695/...-the-riddle-with-no-answer
Banks dispute EBA’s new threshold for IRRBB test: Regulators have proposed doubling a threshold used for identifying which banks have loan and deposit books that are most at risk from changes in interest rates. But risk managers say the new threshold is still too low, and could result in excessive numbers of firms being deemed outliers.
