SPWR & HP ++++
HP Signs Power Purchase Agreements with SunPower and Airtricity

Hewlett Packard announced power purchase agreements with two renewable energy providers, SunPower Corp. in the U.S and Airtricity in Ireland according to a press release.

Use of renewable energy sources such as solar power or wind energy is profitable business wise and also good for the environment said Pat Tiernan, vice president, Social and Environmental Responsibility at HP. “These advances are just part of HP’s comprehensive energy-efficiency program, which we believe is the most aggressive in the technology industry,” said Pat .

HP strives to reduce its carbon emission to lesser than what it achieved this year in Ireland through its contract with Airtricity which will enable it to make 90% of all its energy use renewable.

Airtricity a renewable energy company installs and operates wind farms in Europe and North America. Electricity generated by Airtricity in its onshore and off shore wind farms will be used to power several HP facilities in Ireland for use during 2008 according to the press release.

HP proposes to buy 80 gigawatt –hours of renewable energy from Airtricity according to the contract thereby saving nearly $ 40,000 in one year. The ensuing environmental benefit is that 40,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide which would otherwise be released is prevented.

HP plans to install its solar power plant on a large scale in its San Diego property as per the agreement with SunPower. The agreement covers installation of 1-megawatt solar electric power system and also covers maintenance for 15 years. Around 5,000 solar cells will be installed on 5 of the 7 buildings. The photo-voltaic cells will convert solar energy to produce 1,676,000 kilowatt-hrs of electrical energy in a year. This is 10% of the energy consumption by HP at San Diego.

This project will also save HP almost $750,000 within 15 years on energy expenses. Further carbon dioxide emissions from HP facilities will be cut down by 1 million pounds a year or 16 million pounds for the next 15 years.

This in turn helps HP earn renewable energy credits. HP will also benefit from incentives offered under California Public Utilities Commission’s California Solar Initiative, which strives to increase the use of solar energy through out the state. Solar Employee purchase program proposes to encourage employees to use solar energy at home too according to a HP company statement. Both SunPower and HP have offered to give a rebate when employees install solar power systems in their homes.
HP has been actively trying for decades to reduce its carbon footprint by using safe techniques in product development, operations and in the supply chain management. HP tries to limit wastage and also handles recycling.
Smartway a partnership with U.S Environment Protection agency is important in making HP and its partners more environmentally aware.HP purchased 11 million kilowatts-hrs of renewable energy in 2006 and plans to increase it further in the coming years.

SunPower in 5-year silicon ingot SunPower in 5-year silicon ingot and wafer pact with Jiawei SolarChina

SunPower Corp. Friday said it signed a five-year agreement with Jiawei SolarChina Co. Ltd. to secure a supply of monocrystalline silicon ingots and silicon wafers.

Jiawei is affiliated with SunEnergy, SunPower's solar panel assembly partner.

Shares of SunPower, a San Jose, Calif.-based maker of solar electric power products, rose 4% to $125.44 in premarket trading, on volume of 18,017. The stock closed Thursday at $124.96.

SunPower Upgraded
Jefferies Upgrades SunPower on Profit Outlook, Raises Targets on Suntech, Evergreen Solar

A Jefferies & Co. analyst upgraded shares of SunPower Corp. Friday, saying the solar cell maker will report much stronger profit growth than its rivals over the next three years.

Analyst Paul Clegg raised his rating to "Buy from "Hold," and increased his price target to $170 per share from $105, which he said reflects SunPower's 2009 results.

SunPower shares rose $5.56, or 4.4 percent, to $131 in premarket trading after closing at $125.44 on Thursday.

Clegg said companies throughout the solar sector will get more orders next year, and sale prices will be high in the first half of the year. He also expects that polysilicon, a key material used in making solar cells, will be more readily available in 2009, allowing SunPower to increase production.

Other companies will also speed up production, he said, which will drive down prices for solar modules in the following quarters. But he believes SunPower is well funded and will be able to increase profits in spite of sharp drops in sale prices.

Clegg expects SunPower's profit to grow to $2.29 per share in 2008, 83 percent above his 2007 estimate of $1.25 per share. He forecast 43 percent growth the following year, to $3.28 per share.

SunPower's funding also makes government subsidies less of a concern, Clegg said. Solar power companies depend on government subsidies because of the cost of the technology, and he said questions about the future of those subsidies may make investors nervous.

Clegg also raised his price target on shares of two other solar cell makers Friday.

He lifted his target on Suntech Power Holdings Co. Ltd. to $108 per share from $76, and kept a "Buy" rating. The stock closed at $75.40 Thursday.

Clegg's target on Evergreen Solar Inc., which finished at $13.72 Thursday, went to $12 per share from $10. He rates the stock a "Hold."

December 12, 2007: 03:29 PM EST

NEW YORK (Associated Press) - Shares of SunPower Corp. rose Wednesday after a Raymond James analyst upgraded the company to "Outperform," citing higher confidence in SunPower's long-term earnings potential.

SunPower stock rose $3.72, or 3 percent, to $127.72 in afternoon trading.

Analyst Pavel Molchanov upgraded the San Jose, Calif.-based company from his previous "Market Perform" rating in a note Wednesday. Molchanov cited SunPower's earnings growth, product efficiency and its integration across various aspects of the solar-power market.

Molchanov called his Sept. 21 downgrade of the company due to valuation "premature." He noted that SunPower is "by no means a 'cheap' stock" but that the market will pay more for its competitive edge.
