Stadler Rail's Record Orders Clash with Cash Flow Concerns

Stadler Rail Aktie

Stadler Rail shares are navigating a complex track. While the Swiss train manufacturer boasts a record order book and ambitious growth targets, a persistent negative free cash flow and operational setbacks have fueled significant short interest among institutional investors. This tension defines the current investment thesis for the stock.

The company's financial results for 2025 presented a mixed picture. Revenue climbed 13% to CHF 3.7 billion, and net profit doubled to CHF 100.7 million. However, CFO Raphael Widmer tempered optimism by stating that net working capital is not expected to turn positive in 2026 either, leaving free cash flow deep in negative territory. This structural weakness persists even as the order backlog swells to a historic CHF 32.3 billion.

Two recent contracts highlight Stadler's strategic focus. The Gornergrat Bahn has placed a CHF 30 million order for four additional POLARIS rack railway units, designed for extreme altitudes above 3,000 meters, reinforcing the firm's niche strength in mountain railways. Concurrently, the company is pushing into higher-margin digital signaling. Baselland Transport AG (BLT) will equip its entire core network with Stadler's NOVA Pro train control system, automating 63 vehicles via 4G and 5G networks, with a pilot on Line 11 starting in 2027.

These operational developments support management's bold forecast for 2026, which targets revenue exceeding CHF 5 billion for the first time. The EBIT margin is projected to rise above 5%, a significant improvement from 4.4% the previous year. Achieving this implied 30-40% sales growth hinges on efficiently converting the massive backlog, which includes a joint venture with Siemens for 226 S-Bahn trains in Copenhagen worth approximately €3 billion.

Yet, operational headwinds are creating friction. The TINA tram model has encountered noise and vibration issues, leading to provisional refusal of acceptance by the cities of Darmstadt and Basel. Stadler must retrofit 25 vehicles at its own cost, with delivery now scheduled for late 2026. Separately, Italian prosecutors are investigating the failure of an automatic emergency brake system involved in an accident in Milan; the company has pledged full cooperation.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Stadler Rail?

The market's skepticism is evident in the trading data. According to UBS, Stadler is among the Swiss stocks with the highest short interest. This bet against the share price comes despite a solid 30-day performance, with the stock gaining around 11% to trade at €22.78 on Friday.

Shareholders now look to the Annual General Meeting on May 5, 2026. The agenda includes a vote to triple the dividend to CHF 0.50 per share, allowing investors to participate in the record order backlog. The meeting will also see a leadership transition, with Christoph Franz and Wojciech Kostrzewa stepping down from the Board of Directors. Their proposed successors are Sabrina Soussan, formerly of Siemens Mobility, and Michael Schöllhorn from Airbus.

The true test of the company's ambitious margin targets and its ability to bridge the gap between profit and cash generation will come with the release of the 2026 half-year figures. Until then, the stock remains a story of powerful momentum weighed down by tangible financial and operational challenges.
