ServiceNow's AI Pivot Meets Wall Street's Skepticism

A dramatic downgrade from UBS has sent ServiceNow shares tumbling to a 52-week low of $83, erasing 7.6% on Friday alone and capping a weekly loss of roughly 18.6%. The catalyst was analyst Karl Keirstead’s decision to slash his rating from Buy to Neutral and cut his price target from $170 to $100, a move that has ignited a broader debate about the future of enterprise software.

The stock’s 41% decline year-to-date starkly contrasts with the company’s recent operational performance. For the full year 2025, ServiceNow delivered revenue growth of 21% to $13.3 billion, while current remaining performance obligations surged 27%. The fourth quarter saw revenue hit $3.57 billion, a 20.7% year-over-year increase, with earnings per share surpassing expectations.

Keirstead’s reassessment stems from direct conversations with corporate clients, revealing three core concerns. Some customers are exploring autonomous AI agents for workflow automation instead of expanding their ServiceNow deployments. The Customer Service Management segment, accounting for about 10% of total revenue, is seen as vulnerable to AI-driven headcount reductions that could slow license growth. Furthermore, ServiceNow is not consistently named by clients as their preferred orchestration layer for these AI agents.

Compounding these issues is a significant shift in corporate budgeting. In more than half of UBS's customer discussions, companies reported cutting traditional software spending to redirect funds toward AI infrastructure investments. This trend has led the bank to reduce its growth forecast for ServiceNow’s cRPO by the end of 2026 from 20% to 16%, citing eroding confidence in the company’s competitive positioning.

This skepticism arrives just as ServiceNow executes a radical strategic shift. The company is abandoning its model of charging for premium AI add-ons. Instead, artificial intelligence will be integrated natively and at no extra cost across its entire portfolio. This new architecture features a "Context Engine" for company-specific data and will open the platform to external developer tools like OpenAI Codex, available from mid-April.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ServiceNow?

While intended to simplify automation for customers, the market is nervous about the financial implications. Investors worry how forgoing dedicated AI revenue will impact the core subscription model. The success of ServiceNow’s existing AI product, Now Assist, offers a mixed signal. Its annual contract value surpassed $600 million, with new business doubling in Q4 year-over-year. The company is targeting a Now Assist ACV of over $1 billion for 2026, banking on partnerships with Anthropic and OpenAI and the acquisition of Moveworks.

All eyes are now on April 22, when ServiceNow reports first-quarter 2026 results after the market closes. The company’s own subscription revenue guidance of $3.65 to $3.655 billion implies constant-currency growth of 18.5% to 19%. However, the analyst consensus sits notably higher at $3.75 billion, leaving little room for disappointment. Management also continues to target an operating margin of approximately 32% for the full year and aims for subscription revenue growth above 20% alongside a 36% free-cash-flow margin.

The upcoming report is a critical test. It must demonstrate whether the Now Assist business can maintain momentum, provide data to counter concerns about "seat compression," and prove that deep AI integration can generate enough new volume to offset lost premium fees. For now, strong historical numbers are being overshadowed by profound questions about the future.
