AMD's AI Surge Meets Insider Skepticism as Earnings Loom

Advanced Micro Devices shares reached a new all-time high of €235.85 on Friday, propelled by a potent mix of analyst optimism and robust industry signals. Yet, this record-setting rally coincides with a wave of significant insider selling, creating a complex picture for investors ahead of the company's first-quarter report.

The recent surge, marking a 34% gain over the past month, received a major boost from Bank of America. Analyst Vivek Arya raised his price target to $310, citing AMD's leadership in cloud applications. His team projects massive potential from data center expansion, with tech giants like Meta and OpenAI planning significant capacity increases for the second half of 2026. Each new gigawatt of power deployed could translate to up to $20 billion in revenue for AMD, according to the analysts.

Foundry Strength and Competitive Gains

Adding to the bullish sentiment, AMD's key manufacturing partner, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), delivered a strong signal. TSMC reported another record quarter, with profits surging 58% in Q1, and raised its 2026 revenue growth forecast to over 30%. This points to sustained, overwhelming demand for high-performance chips, with industry experts anticipating a sold-out market through the end of 2026. Bernstein Research promptly raised its AMD price target to $265, referencing accelerated data center demand.

AMD's competitive position is visibly strengthening. In the fourth quarter of 2025, AMD posted revenue of $10.3 billion with a net margin of approximately 16%. In contrast, rival Intel reported $13.7 billion in revenue but operated at a loss, with a margin around -2%. The data center segment is now AMD's primary revenue driver, with segment sales soaring 94% in 2024 to $12.6 billion. Some analysts believe AMD could overtake Intel in total revenue by 2027 if its current growth trajectory holds.

Major Deal and Lofty Goals

A significant commercial win underpins this momentum. AMD has secured a major order from AI firm Anthropic for its next-generation Instinct MI450 accelerators. These chips, based on the 2nm CDNA-5 architecture, represent the successor to the MI300 series. This deal, alongside growing adoption from OpenAI and Meta, solidifies AMD's position as a credible alternative in the AI infrastructure market. CEO Lisa Su has set an ambitious target of achieving $100 billion in annual data center revenue by 2030.

Insider Sales and Earnings Focus

However, the record highs have prompted substantial profit-taking from within the company itself. On April 16, Executive Vice President Mark Papermaster sold nearly 27,000 shares for approximately $7.45 million. Over the past 90 days, total insider sales—including earlier transactions by CEO Lisa Su—have exceeded 273,000 shares worth about $59 million.

This activity introduces a note of caution as the market turns its attention to AMD's upcoming earnings release on May 5. Management has guided for first-quarter revenue of around $9.8 billion. A persistent headwind remains the China business, where export controls are expected to limit MI308 chip sales to just $100 million.

Trading volume has spiked recently, suggesting institutional investors are positioning for the report. The market's consensus rating stands at "Moderate Buy" with an average price target near $291, implying limited upside after the recent rally according to the analyst majority. A positive outlook for the new MI400 series chips could make the current all-time high a mere waypoint, but the confluence of explosive growth and insider divestment makes for a high-stakes moment.
